James' RBIs help Viterbo earn a win in NSAA Doubleheader

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Softball team hosted Valley City State University in a conference doubleheader on Saturday. The teams split the series with the Vikings taking game one 2-8 and the V-Hawks claiming game two 4-3. Viterbo moves to 7-20 overall (3-11 NSAA) while Valley City State rises to 13-18 overall (7-4 NSAA).

Valley City State took the lead in the first inning with leadoff batter Ashlynne Copinga scoring home followed with an RBI single by Riley Perryman. Perryman was able to score off a right field hit by Sierra Crocker and headed into inning two with Viterbo trailing 0-3. The Vikings put up another run on the board in the top of the second holding the V-Hawks at 0. Andrea Rodriquez recorded an RBI single before retiring Viterbo's first three batters heading into the fourth inning 0-5. Perryman earned a sacrifice RBI followed by another run home on a passed ball in the top of the fifth. The teams went scoreless in the sixth before the V-Hawks got on the board with Brittney Slocum scoring off of a bunt by Sydney Haakenson. An error by the Vikings allowed Haakenson to advance home ending the game 2-8.

V-Hawk pitcher Julie Woodman recorded the loss pitching 5 innings and striking out 0 batters. Maddy Zander recorded the win pitching all 7 innings and striking out 9 batters.

Game two gave Viterbo the lead in inning one with two RBIs by Morgan James going into inning two 2-0. The V-Hawks held the Vikings to 0 and stretched their lead with another double RBI by James sending teammates Haakenson and Makayla Nortman home. Valley City State answered back with a sacrifice RBI by Perryman followed by an RBI by Crocker going into inning four 4-2. Both teams went scoreless in innings 5-6 before pinch hitter Rodriguez earned a walk that would eventually score home off of an RBI single by Ashlyn Diemert. With the tieing run on third base the V-Hawks were able to get three outs to win game two 4-3.

Nortman and Haakenson went 2 for 4 at the plate. James recorded 4 RBIs. Morgan Fuhrer earned the win pitching all 7 innings and striking out 3 hitters. Joelle Lamontagne recorded the loss pitching 6 innings and striking out 3 batters.

The V-Hawks will head to Waldorf University for another conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 12 at 2:00 and 5:00 PM CST.
