V-Hawks fall to the Comets in final home series

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The Viterbo Softball team battled the Mayville State University Comets this weekend in a four-game series at the Viterbo Outdoor Athletic Complex. The V-Hawks celebrated senior day on Saturday honoring their two seniors: Channing Manske and Jacky Mathews. Viterbo fought hard but lost all four games ending the weekend with an overall record of 5-35 and conference record of 2-22.

Game one: Viterbo - 3, Mayville State - 11

  • The Comets scored 2 points in the first inning with two triples and held the V-Hawks at 0 points entering the second inning. 
  • Mayville State stretched their lead scoring 1 point in the third inning and 4 points in the fourth inning.
  • Viterbo was able to put their first point on the board with an RBI from Karissa Walsh
  • A double by Brittney Slocum helped The V-Hawks put their final 2 points on the board in the fifth inning
  • The Comets went on to score another 4 points and secure the win in a total of seven innings
  • Key players: Brittney Slocum - double, 2 RBI; Amanda Bogdonovich - double, one run; Morgan James - double, one run 

Game two: Viterbo - 0, Mayville State - 4

  • The Comets got off to a head start in the first inning scoring 3 of their 4 total points in the game
  • The next five innings were a pitchers dual with Amanda Bogdonovich pitching all seven innings allowing 4 runs, one walk, nine hits, and four strikeouts 
  • Mayville State scored 1 more run in the seventh inning and winning game two of the series

Game three: Viterbo - 1, Mayville State - 12

  • Mayville State scored 2 points right away in the first inning and held Viterbo to zero points
  • Pitcher Ella Driebel scored the V-Hawks first and only point of the game in the third inning
  • The Comets scored 2 more points in the fourth inning and 8 points in the fifth inning ending the game in five total innings

Game four: Viterbo - 1, Mayville State - 9

  • Both teams held eachother to 0 points in the first two innings with Mayville State putting the first 2 points on the board in the third inning
  • The comets stretched their lead scoring 2 points in the fourth, 1 point in the fifth, and 4 points in the seventh inning
  • Jacky Mathews scored the V-Hawks first and only point in the seventh inning

The Viterbo Softball team will travel to Mount Pleasent, Iowa on Wednesday, April 27th to take on the Iowa Wesleyan University Tigers at 3:00 PM & 5:00 PM CDT. Follow the action on our website or by following us on social media.
