Viterbo Softball earns first conference win vs. Dakota State

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Softball team battled the Dakota State University Trojans at the Viterbo Outdoor Athletic Complex this holiday weekend. The V-hawks won one game of the four-game series earning their first conference win of the season.

Game one: Viterbo – 1 Dakota State – 11

  • Both teams started off slow scoring zero points in the first inning and one point each in the second inning.
  • The pitchers dual continued through the third and fourth innings with the Trojans scoring one extra point.
  • Dakota state came into the fifth inning with hot bats scoring 9 runs ending the game in five total innings.

Game two: Viterbo – 6 Dakota State – 11

  • The Trojans started off strong scoring 5 points in the first two innings.
  • Jacky Mathews came out hot in the second inning hitting a home run and putting the V-hawks first point on the board
  • Another V-hawk home run by Karissa Walsh added 3 more points in the third inning.
  • Fifth inning Dakota State scored 3 runs while Morgan James contributed a solo home run for the V-hawks.
  • Both teams went scoreless in the sixth inning. Dakota State continued their lead in the seventh inning adding 3 more points and Viterbo adding 1.
  • Key players: Morgan James – one home run; Karissa Walsh – one home run, three RBI's; Jacky Mathews – one home run, two RBI's.

Game three: Viterbo – 7 Dakota State – 12

  • The Trojans took the lead in the first two innings scoring 6 points against the V-hawks.
  • Viterbo put their first 2 points on the board in the third inning with a sacrifice fly out to left field from Morgan James.
  • Dakota State outscored Viterbo in the fourth inning 2-1 and continued their lead in the fifth inning scoring another 3 points
  • The V-hawks added 2 points in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly out to left field by Karissa Walsh and an RBI single by Jacky Mathews.
  • The two teams were scoreless in the sixth inning. Viterbo outscored Dakota State in the seventh inning 2-1 with a home run by Karissa Walsh.

Game four: Viterbo – 15 Dakota State – 14

  • Viterbo came out resilient in the first inning outscoring Dakota State 5-1 run with a single from Emily Roberts and Haleigh Zanoni, and a double from Karissa Walsh.
  • The Trojans answered in the second inning by adding 6 points making the score 6-6 going into the third inning.
  • Viterbo contributed one point in the fourth inning while Dakota State added one point in the fifth inning keeping the score tied 7-7 going into the sixth inning.
  • The V-hawks regained their lead in the sixth inning scoring 6 points with a double from Ella Driebel and a home run over right field from Morgan James.
  • The Trojans hit a home run in the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough, and the V-hawks brought home the win.
  • Key players: Morgan James – one home run, three RBI's; Haleigh Zanoni – three RBI's, one run; Ella Driebel – double, two RBI's, one run; Emily Roberts – double, one RBI, three runs; Amanda Bogdonovich – three runs, one RBI, pitched 4.2 innings, allowing 4 hits, 2 runs, 3 strikeouts
