V-Hawks play well, but fall to Blue Hawks in four-game series

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Softball team took the field at the Viterbo Outdoor Athletic Complex this weekend for a four-game series against Dickinson State. The V-Hawks played well, but the Blue Hawks were able to rally to defeat Viterbo in each of the games.

Game one: Viterbo – 6, Dickinson State – 9

  • The Blue Hawks struck first after a two-run homer in the top of the second inning. The V-Hawks answered in the bottom of the fourth inning after an Amanda Bogdonovich double scored two runs.
  • Dickinson State quickly regained their lead, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth, but the V-Hawks were able to answer again.
  • The Blue Hawks scored in the final two innings, however, giving themselves a final lead that the V-Hawks could not recover from.
  • Key players: Brittney Slocum – 4-4, two RBIs, double, walk; Morgan James – 2-2, two walks, one run; Jacky Mathews – 3-4, one run

Game two: Viterbo – 5, Dickinson State – 8 

  • Karissa Walsh got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run to center. 
  • The Blue Hawks answered by scoring eight runs in the next three innings. 
  • The V-Hawks chipped away by scoring one in the fourth after a Bogdonovich RBI single and two in the sixth after a Zanoni RBI triple.
  • Key players: Bogdonovich – 2-4, one run, one RBI; Jacky Mathews – 3-4, two runs

Game three: Viterbo – 0, Dickinson State – 1

  • Game three was a pitcher's duel throughout in the cold weather.
  • The V-Hawks collected only two hits and one walk in all seven innings.
  • Ella Driebel pitched seven innings, allowing five hits, no walks, and only one run.

Game four: Viterbo – 9, Dickinson State – 11

  • The V-Hawks gave up three runs to begin the final game of the series, however Viterbo was able to answer in the second with nine runs of their own.
  • Delaney Ryan and the V-Hawks held Dickinson State scoreless for the next four innings, but the relentless Blue Hawks fought back again.
  • Dickinson State scored eight runs in the final two innings to retake the very late lead and win the game.
  • Key players: Karissa Walsh – 2-4, two RBIs, one run; Gracie Hamann – 2-4, two RBIs, one run; Ella Driebel – 1-3, one RBI, one run, one inning pitched, zero runs

The Viterbo Softball team will be on the road this week, traveling to Waldorf University on Wednesday. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 3:00 PM CDT. Follow the action on our website or by following us on social media.
