V-Hawks lose Doubleheader on the Road

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. - The Viterbo University Men's Volleyball team traveled to Illinios to compete in a doubleheader match against the Aquinas College Saints and the Trinity Christian University Trolls. The V-Hawks fell to Aquinas in the early match 0-3 (31-33, 17-25, 19-25). Trinity Christian defeated the V-Hawks in second match of the day 0-3 (14-25, 16-25, 21-25). Viterbo falls to 3-3 overall (1-2 CCAC) while Aquinas rises to 3-3 and Trinity Christian advances to 6-2.

The Saints started off set one with a six point streak leading the V-Hawks 3-9. A couple errors by Aquinas and a kill by V-Hawk Jacob Nonn helped Viterbo close the gap 11-13. The teams traded points before back-to-back kills by Nonn and a service ace by Daxton Marschall tied the game 17-17. The Saints reclaimed their lead with kills by Joshua Boothroyd, 19-23. A couple errors by the Saints and a kill by Joe Todd tied the game at 24-24. The teams traded points before a kill by V-Hawk Alex Kratzenstein tied the game again at 27-27. The game would tie three more times before Boothroyd contributed back-to-back kills for the Saints to win the set one 31-33.

Viterbo and Aquinas traded points to start off set two tieing and 8-8 with a kill by Kratzenstein. Nonn added a kill tieing the game again at 11-11 before the Saints went on a four-point run with a service ace by Boothroyd. Julian Armendano added three kills to help Aquinas stretch their lead 14-21. The teams traded points with Boothroyd adding another kill bringing the score to 16-24. Chase Gil of Aquinas scored the final point of the game with the V-Hawks falling to the Saints 17-25.

Set three started off similar to set two with both teams scoring and tieing at 6-6. The Saints went on a six point run with two kills by Armendano bringing the score to 7-12. Aquinas maintained their lead with a couple errors by the V-Hawks, 13-18. Back-to-back kills by Boothroyd helped the Saints stay ahead 15-21. Armendano ended set three with a kill defeating the V-Hawks 19-25.

Nonn led the V-Hawks with 11 kills followed by Todd with 7. Jaden Wiest contributed 24 assists and 3 block assists. Juan Banda recorded 16 digs and 5 assists.

Boothroyd led the Saints with 18 kills and contributed 10 digs. Armendano added 15 kills and 12 digs. Leo-Paul Rousseau contributed 45 assists and 9 digs.

 

Trinity Christian started off set one with a four point streak leading 4-10. The teams traded points before the Trolls stretched their lead 7-15 with two service aces by Ryan Schmidt forcing a Viterbo timeout. The V-Hawks fought hard but couldn't keep up with the Trolls as the set ended 14-25.

Set two started off similar with the Trolls gaining the lead early on 3-10 with two service aces by Schmidt. The V-Hawks answered back with a kill by Alex Kratzenstein bringing them within five points of the trolls, 6-11. Two kills by Alex Costa helped Trinity Christian stretch their lead 10-19. A few errors by the Trolls brought Viterbo back in the game before Trinity scored three points in a row ending set two 16-25.

The teams traded points to start set three tieing at 9-9 with kills by Juan Banda and Kratzenstein. Costa added a kill for the Trolls tieing the game again at 12-12. A couple errors by Trinity and a kill by Banda helped the V-Hawks lead 17-16. The Trolls answered back with a four point streak forcing a Viterbo timeout with the V-Hawks trailing 17-20. Viterbo came back out on the court strong getting within one point of the Trolls with a kill by Nonn, 20-21. Costa was responsible for the next four kills of the game ending set three and defeating the V-Hawks 21-25.

Banda led the V-Hawks with 5 kills and 5 digs. Jaden Wiest added 13 assists. Jacob Nonn contributed 3 kills and 9 digs.

Alex Costa led the Trolls with 20 kills followed by Nick Mioni with 7. Schmidt recorded 32 assists and 5 service aces. Jacob Krefft added 11 digs.

The V-Hawks will come back home to take on Judson on Tuesday, February 7th at 7:00 PM CST.
