Nonn Hits 1,000 Kills as V-Hawks Defeat Lakeland

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The Viterbo University Men's Volleyball team hosted their first triangular of the season taking on the Lakeland University Muskies on Saturday afternoon. The V-Hawks defeated the Muskies 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-22). The V-Hawks rise to 2-1 overall (0-1 CCAC) while the Muskies fall to 2-3. 

The teams traded points to start off set one 4-5 with a kill by V-Hawk Jacob Nonn. A kill by Juan Banda tied the game 13-13 before Viterbo went on a run with Lakeland producing three back-to-back attack errors bringing the score to 17-13. The Muskies answered back with Ben Busalacchi adding three kills giving Lakeland the lead 20-21. Two errors by Lakeland gave Viterbo back the lead 22-21. The teams traded points before a kill by Banda tied the game 23-23. The Muskies produced two kills to end set one 23-25.

Lakeland and Viterbo traded points to start out set two before two service errors by the V-Hawks helped the Muskies took a slight lead 6-8. Lakeland stretched their lead 8-12 with an ace by Busalacchi. The V-Hawks answered back producing three kills and tieing the game at 13-13. Viterbo took the lead and capitalized with two service aces by Banda forcing a Lakeland timeout at 21-16. The V-Hawks allowed the Muskies only one more point before dominating set two 25-17.

Viterbo got the lead in set three with back-to-back kills by Banda, Daxton Marschall, and Alex Kratzenstein, 8-5. The V-Hawks were able to maintain their lead with a kill by Joe Todd, 14-12. A service ace by Nonn helped give Viterbo a four point lead, 17-13. Lakeland came out of a timeout adding two kills by Levi Everts and Busalacchi with Viterbo up 19-16. The V-Hawks scored the next 5 out of 6 points with a service ace by Banda, 24-17. A kill by V-Hawk Jaden Wiest ended the third set 25-18.

Viterbo started off with the lead putting up the first four points of set four and extending that lead 10-4 with a kill by Banda. Busalacchi produced a kill for the Muskies before went on a four point streak with a service ace by Kou Her bringing the score to 14-5. Nonn helped the V-Hawks maintain their lead hitting his 1,000th kill and becoming the first Viterbo men's volleyball player in school history to hit that record. The teams traded points before a kill by Busalacchi brought the Muskies within two points of the V-Hawks, 23-21. Banda ended set four with a kill and the V-Hawks defeated the Muskies 25-22.

Jacob Nonn led the V-Hawks with 14 kills. Juan Banda added 12 kills, 5 service aces, and 7 digs. Jaden Wiest contributed 33 assists and 11 digs.

Ben Busalacchi recorded 21 kills and 4 service aces for the Muskies. Gavin Kenney added 13 digs. Chase Anderson contributed 24 assists and 6 digs.

The V-Hawks will go on the road to compete against Trinity International University (Ill.) on Friday, February 3rd at 7:00 PM CST.
