Viterbo wins twice at home tournament

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The Viterbo Men's Volleyball team (8-9) took the court at R.W. Beggs Sr. Gymnasium Saturday afternoon to face conference opponent Roosevelt University (2-7) and Dordt University (5-8). The V-Hawks won in straight sets in their first match, 25-11, 25-18, 25-13. The V-Hawks then went on to defeat the defenders in four sets, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 27-25.

Match 1 – Viterbo 3, Roosevelt 0

The V-Hawks came ready to play Saturday. They started the day off with a 25-11 win in set one vs. Roosevelt. The V-Hawks hit a .267 clip while keeping Roosevelt to a -.217 hitting percentage. Aggressive serving throughout the game allowed for Viterbo to make a couple big runs.

Set two was close through the halfway point, but a kill by Jacob Nonn (JR/Cross Plains, Wis.) along with an ace gave the V-Hawks a five-point lead late in the second set. Viterbo continued their heavy offense with kills from Brett Thompson (SR/West Salem, Wis.) and Dane Kerkman (SO/Racine, Wis.) to end the set 25-18.

Viterbo opened the third set with a 7-2 run behind aggressive serving from Jacob Nonn and Thomas Robson. The V-Hawks dominate offense combined with Roosevelt errors allowed for Viterbo to control set three. Joe Todd (SO/Wauwatosa, Wis.) went on a late service run to extend the V-Hawk lead to 11. Derek Myers (FR/Brookwood, Wis.) recorded his first career ace and Juan Banda (SO/Dexter, NM) had a kill to give Viterbo a 25-13 win.

VU Leaders: Brett Thompson 9 kills, Andrew Lepage (JR/Cross Plains, Wis.) 18 assists, Joe Todd 3 service aces, Jacob Nonn 5 digs.

Match 2 – Viterbo 3, Dordt 1

Viterbo played a close four set match vs. Dordt University. Set one was a battle, but a couple defensive stops allowed for the V-Hawks to take the first set 25-21.

Set two was another close set with Dordt edging out the V-Hawks 22-25. Dordt capitalized on a couple V-Hawk errors to extend their lead and take the set 22-25.

Viterbo bounced back in the third set holding the defenders to a -.036 hitting percentage. The V-Hawk offense continued to be explosive with 13 kills and a .273 hitting percentage.

Set four ended with a 27-25 victory for the V-Hawks. Viterbo managed to pick up a few more defensive plays, which allowed their offense to keep dominating.
