Men's Volleyball wins two of three games in Chicago

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Viterbo Men's Volleyball (5-6) went 2-1 in Chicago this weekend. Viterbo lost to (RV) Trinity Christian College in straight sets Friday night, 18-25, 14-25, 22-25. Saturday the V-Hawks bounced back with a 3-1 win over Judson University, 25-23, 25-27, 27-25, 25-19. The V-Hawks carried the energy into their match Sunday afternoon sweeping Roosevelt University, 25-21, 25-18, 28-26.

Match 1 – Viterbo 1, (RV) Trinity Christian 3

Trinity Christian rolled out to an early lead 3-10 vs. the V-Hawks. A kill by Brett Thompson along with a pair of Trolls errors cut the deficit to four, but the V-Hawks couldn't recover, and the Trolls took set one 18-25.

Set two the V-Hawks played hard early in the set, but a late run from Trintiy Chrisitan mixed with hitting a clip of .476 took advantage of the V-Hawks. Trolls took the set 14-25.

Viterbo came out battling in set three. After a tough fought third set, which included five ties, the V-Hawks made some late errors allowing the Trolls to top them 22-25.

Match 2 – Viterbo 3, Judson 1

Viterbo came out strong in their second match of the weekend. Jacob Nonn sparked a service run to begin the game, allowing the V-Hawks to take advantage early. Judson capitalized late in the game on V-Hawk errors and brought the game within two points. A Judson error ended a tough set one battle 25-23.

Set two Judson started strong with a 13-8 lead on the v-Hawks. A kill by Brett Thompson, followed by back-to-back service aces from Thomas Robson allowed the V-Hawks to tie the game up at 16-16. The rest of the match went point for point until Judson finished the game with three consecutive kills.

The V-Hawks trailed again early in the third, but they managed to cut the deficit slowly throughout the set. With another set going extra points, a kill from Jacob Nonn followed by a block from Spencer Persaud carried the V-Hawks to a set three victory 27-25.

Set four was all V-Hawks early. Viterbo was up 10-5 when Judson began to string a few runs together. A service run by Jacob Nonn extended the V-Hawk lead as they took the final set 25-19.

Match 3 – Viterbo 3, Roosevelt 0

Juan Banda set off an early 4-0 run for the V-Hawks with his serves, allowing Viterbo to take a comfortable lead in the first set. Viterbo capitalized on Roosevelt errors winning 25-21.

Roosevelt came out the second set battling. Vaunghtre Young had an ace along with a three-point service run to help separate Viterbo. A pair of Roosevelt errors and a kill by Brett Thompson gave the V-Hawks the set 25-18.

Set three was a contest, with no team leading by more than three points the whole set. A crucial kill from Dane Kerkman tied the set up at 25-25. Two Roosevelt errors ended the match in extra points, 28-26 Viterbo.

The Viterbo Men's Volleyball team (5-6) will be back in action at home on Thursday to face Maranatha Baptist University. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Follow the action on our website or by following us on social media.
