SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Viterbo University Men's Soccer team opened their 2024 season with a 4-2 loss at Morningside University (Iowa) on Monday afternoon. The V-Hawks start the season 0-1, while the Mustangs rise 1-0.
Back-to-back corner kicks by Santiago Tellez in the 4th minute would jump start the match, though the Mustangs would take the lead with the first shot of the game. Andrii Ketsuk would land the first shot on goal, followed by Nicolas Lopez a couple minutes later at 17:10, but both would be saved by Timon Koerber. Following up his own penalty kick Conner Erdmann would have the first goal of the season bringing the score 1-2 going into the half.
Tellez would score an unassisted goal with 58:56 in the clock tying the match at 2-2. Morningside's Niclas Bickel would come back to score returning them to the lead. Without letting off MU would take two shots on goal giving Ernesto Ascenzo his first saves of the season in the 77th minute. The Mustangs would kick the final goal of the game with 9 minutes remaining sealing Viterbo's first loss of the season.
Nine different V-Hawks attempted a shot, with seven landing on goal. The Mustangs had 10 shots with six on goal.
The V-Hawks return to action on Thursday August 22 with a scrimmage against UW-River Falls.
