V-Hawks Claim Conference Victory in Iowa

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Viterbo University Men's Soccer team, receiving votes in the most recent NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll, bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 5-1 win over Iowa Wesleyan on Sunday Afternoon at the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Classic. The V-Hawks improve to 12-1 (1-1 CAC) while the Tigers drop to 3-11-1 (0-2-1).

Diego Arenal found the net on just the second shot taken in the game, a goal assisted by Alfie Gyurkovits in the 12th minute. After Ernesto Ascenzo was able to save two shots on goal, Iowa Wesleyan was able to even the score on a goal by Thomas Mullen at the 28:17 mark. Five minutes later, Arenal found Jason Niba for a goal to give the advantage back to the V-Hawks. Conner Erdmann and Polizois Douvas each put shots on goal before half, but Harrison Gailey was able to save them both.

Viterbo was back on the board just nine minutes into the second half, with Benian Yao putting in a goal assisted by Gyurkovits and Jacob Battista. Gyurkovits put the V-Hawks up 4-1 with a goal of his own, assisted by Battista, in the 65th minute, and Aidan Greer would score another V-Hawk goal just four minutes later on an assist by Dakota Hatzenbeller. Each team would manage one more shot on goal, and each goalie would save the shot before the end of the game.

Viterbo outshot Iowa Wesleyan, including 9-5 on goal, and took three more corner kicks. Ascenzo (11-1) earned the win with three saves, and Gailey had four saves.

The V-Hawks continue their season on Wednesday, October 19at Bethel University (Minn.).
