V-Hawks Notch Another Shutout on the Road

APPLETON, Wis. – The Viterbo University Men's Soccer team, receiving votes in this weeks, NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll, defeated Lawrence University 2-0 Sunday afternoon at the Banta Bowl Stadium. The V-Hawks improve to 7-0 while the Vikings drop to 1-3-1.

Sammy Ankaoglu pushed the pace to start the game, taking a shot on goal just one minute into the game, but it was saved by Lawrence goalie Nason Lancina. Sebastian Acosta would record a shot on goal of his own in the 16th minute, and in the 29th minute, the Vikings would answer with their first shot on goal of the game, but V-Hawk goalie Ernesto Ascenzo was there for the save. Acosta found Benian Yao at the 32:42 mark to break the stalemate and give Viterbo a 1-0 lead. Each keeper would record one more save before the end of the half, and Viterbo would take the advantage into the break.

Viterbo's offense was aggressive to start the second half, taking seven shots in the first eight minutes, and Lancina recorded three more saves off those. But Ankaoglu's goal in the 60th minute, set up by Acosta and Diego Arenal, got past the Viking defense, and Viterbo went up 2-0. Alfie Gyurkovits would take the final shot on goal of the game for either team two minutes later, and the V-Hawks defense held for their seventh shutout pf the season.

Viterbo would outshoot Lawrence 22-6, including 10-2 on goal, and take nine corner kicks to the Vikings two. Ascenzo (6-0) earned the win while recording two saves. Lancina (0-3-0) finished the day with eight saves.

The V-Hawks return to the pitch Saturday, September 17 at Central College (Iowa) at 1:30 PM.
