Crubel's Hot Shooting not Enough

Palos Heights, Ill. - The Viterbo University Men's Basketball fell Wednesday evening to the Trinity Christian College 74-69. The V-Hawks fall to 3-9 (CCAC 1-4) while the Trolls rise to 5-6 (CCAC 2-3).
Viterbo started with strong individual efforts, particularly from Cole Crubel, who showcased his scoring versatility with mid-range jumpers and three-pointers. Early in the game, Crubel hit a pivotal three-pointer at the 18:43 mark to give Viterbo its first lead. Landon Thousand contributed assists, setting up scoring opportunities for teammates.
Despite moments of offensive success, turnovers hindered Viterbo's rhythm. Braden Crubel and others struggled against Trinity Christian's defensive pressure, leading to fast breaks and points off turnovers. Defensively, Christian Rohde provided key rebounds, helping to limit second-chance opportunities for Trinity Christian.
As the half progressed, Viterbo rallied, with Crubel again stepping up by hitting another three-pointer. In the final seconds, Lukas Hoffman's three-pointer brought Viterbo closer, narrowing the deficit to four points (36-40) at halftime.
Viterbo came out strong in the second half, with Cole Crubel scoring a three-pointer early to close the gap. Colin Adams played an impactful role, scoring critical layups and drawing fouls, putting Viterbo ahead at 18:32 with a layup to make it 41-40.
Defensively, Viterbo excelled, with Rohde recording blocks and rebounds. Adams's consistent free throws and Fletcher Treyton's three-point shooting helped maintain momentum. However, turnovers and missed opportunities allowed Trinity Christian to reclaim the lead.
Late in the half, Braden Crubel hit back-to-back three-pointers, helping Viterbo tie the game at 57-57 and momentarily take the lead at 60-57. Trinity Christian responded with a scoring run, but Viterbo's persistence kept the game within reach, with Jack Voigt converting free throws to edge ahead 69-67.
In the final moments, Trinity Christian's Marcus Green and Tylan Harris hit key shots, including a decisive three-pointer by Harris, securing the win for Trinity Christian, 74-69. Despite the loss, Viterbo displayed resilience and key contributions from multiple players throughout the game.
The V-Hawks return to action to start the New Year at home January 4, facing off with Saint Saint Xavier.
