V-Hawks Fall to the Red Hawks

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Viterbo University Men's Basketball team recorded their first loss of the year, 85-77 to Indiana University-Northwest in their final game of the Clarke University (Iowa) Classic. The V-Hawks fall to 1-1 on the year, while the Red Hawks improve to 2-0.

Ben Olson recorded the first points of the game, and Dakota Mannel's steal lead to an assist to Colin Adams. Cole Crubel hit a three, then converted a four-point play in back-to-back possessions to go up 15-8 at 12:59, but Ladaion Barnes hit two straight three to close the lead to just 20-19. The Red Hawks then took their first lead at 8:16, 23-22. After a Keegan Severn jumper, IUNW scored seven straight, and despite a Stefan Popovic three, Northwest added to their lead, taking a 44-31 lead into the half.

IU would extended the lead to 15 early in the second half, but Nick Malovrh set up a Jack Monis jumper and after a pair of free throws, Mannel found Monis as well. After an Olson jumper, Monis scored six straight and the V-Hawks trailed just 50-49. The Red Hawks built another seven point lead, and while Olson scored six out of eight point as VU brought the game within one possession again, 72-69 at 3:17. Turnovers would hurt the V-Hawks late, and the Red Hawks held onto an 85-77 win.

Monis led all players with 24 points, 22 coming in the second half, Olson added 18, while Mannel had a game-high 10 assists and Adams had seven boards. Malovrh added four steals. Jalen Houston led IUNW with 22 points, and Dannie Smith had 14 with a game-high eight rebounds.

The teams shot almost identically from the floor, (52.5%-54.5%), but the Red Hawks were on fire from three, shotting 52% (33.3% for the V-Hawks). IUNW also grabbed 31 rebounds to 25for VU.

The V-Hawks return to action on Wednesday, November 1 as they host Clarke University.
