LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Baseball team won one and lost one Saturday afternoon on senior day against St. Francis Univeristy. The V-Hawks fall to 23-22 (CCAC 18-12) while the Fighting Saints also fall to 20-28 (CCAC 16-14).
Viterbo 5, St. Francis 2
The V-Hawks would go down two in the second inning, sitting steady at 0-2 until a massive sixth inning with a pair of runs and a three run homer for the win.
Brandon Jeanke would pitch the full seven innings on the mound, striking out three batters, over 144 pitches including 79 strikes.
At the plate Cody Wells would lead with a three run bomb, while Xavier Gilmore and Brett Stuessel would also record RBIs. In the field Stuessel and Spencer Hans would turn a double play to fuel the fire.
Viterbo 4, St. Francis 10
The fighting Saints would open game two with four runs that would go uncontested until a homer in the fourth. Though the Saints remained persistent adding additional runs in the sixth, eighth, and nineth innings. The V-Hawks only response came in the bottom of the sixth where they would score three runs off a pair of doubles.
Starting on the mound Jake Ouweneel would pitch the opening five innings including five strikeouts in 71 pitches. Bryant Koenig would come in relief for two innings throwing 16 pitches and eight strikes including a strikeout. The final three innings would be pitched differently with Dominic LeBlanc, Joe Nelan, and Brandon Shepherd making appearances.
Gavin Daniel led game two with a double and two RBIs, Stuessel close behind with a homer and Dane Mediger with a double and the final RBI.
The CCAC Conference Championships begin Thursday May 1 in Joliet, Ill.
