LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Baseball team took both wins in the first two games of their series with Calumet College of St. Joseph Friday afternoon, Brandon Jaenke leading with a new Viterbo career strikeout record. The V-Hawks rise to 17-17 (CCAC 12-10) while the Crimson Wave sinks to 6-21 (CCAC 6-15).
Viterbo 5, Calumet 2
The Crimson Wave opened the first inning with a run that the V-Hawks would match in the bottom before taking the lead in the second, increasing the lead in the fourth and sending in a two run double in the bottom of the sixth.
Jaenke pitched the first five innings for the V-Hawks with eight strikeouts, including three hits and two runs for the win. In relief Jomar Guzman and Nolan Hines would finish out the game with an inning each combining for three hits allowed.
Gavin Daniel led with a double and two RBIs for the V-Hawks, Brett Stuessel and Dane Mediger would also have a double and an RBI each.
Viterbo 17, Calumet 4
The V-Hawks would take an early lead with three runs in the first inning before scoring every inning to follow including a homer.
Pitching five innings Jake Ouweneel would claim the win with three strikeouts, and three hits, not letting up a single run. Brandon Shepard would finish out the game in relief with a single strikeout, five hits and four runs.
Spencer Hans would lead at the plate in game two with a home run and two RBIs. Xavier Gilmore would add to the board with a triple, a double, two RBIs and a stolen base, while Mediger would also have a double, a stolen base, and three RBIs. In the field a series of double plays would turn with Stuessel and Hans with three, Mediger two, and Luisangel Reyes with one.
The V-Hawks return to action Saturday, April 12 for games three and four of the Calumet series.
