CHICAGO, Ill. – The Viterbo University fell on the road at Saint Xavier Thursday afternoon on their first two games of the series. The V-Hawks sink to 14-15 (CCAC 9-9), while the Cougars rise to 17-15 (CCAC 10-6).
Viterbo 4, Saint Xavier 10
The V-Hawks would go up two in the top of the first, though the Cougars would respond with an extra run in the bottom, continued by another three runs in the third and four in the fourth. VU attempting to come back in the top of the seven with a two run homer but would fall short.
Starting on the mound, Brandon Jaenke would pitch four innings, striking out four batters, and allowing seven hits and ten runs. Bryant Koenig would come in relief for the final two innings with two strikeouts and no hits or runs allowed.
Xavier Gilmore would led the V-Hawks with two RBI's and a home run, Brett Stuessel would also collect two RBIs and a stolen base, and Spencer Hans would hit for a double.
Viterbo 2, Saint Xavier 5
The Cougars would take the lead in the first and second innings though the V-Hawks would have a strong fourth inning bringing the deficit within one, though SXU would pull away in the lead in the bottome of the fifth with a pair of runs.
Jake Ouweneel would pitch the first five for the V-Hawks, striking our three batters, letting up seven hits and five runs including a home run. In relief, Adam Olson would pitch the next three innings with three strikeouts, and two hits but no runs.
Off a triple Ryder Mortensen would collect an RBI followed by Hunter Hess with an RBI off a single to send Gilmore home. Gilmore and Hans would add to their day one accolades with a stolen base each. In the field Stuessel and Dane Mediger would assist in two double plays.
The V-Hawks return to action Fruday April 4 for day two of the series at Saint Xavier.
