LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University baseball team swept their season home opener against Indiana South Bend on Thursday and Friday afternoon. The V-Hawks rise to 11-5 (CCAC 7-1), while the Titan sink to 7-13 (CCAC 3-5).

Viterbo, 5, IU-South Bend 3

The V-Hawks started out game one strong with a run in the first inning, followed by a home run by Gavin Daniel in the second, sending Roberto Echevarria home with him. The Titans moved to regain the lead though Luisangel Reyes with a home run would end game one.

Brett Stuessel would open the game on the mound with five innings pitched, three strikeouts, allowing three runs over two hits for the win. In relief Nolan Hines would take to the mound for two  innings with three strikeouts and a single hit.

Daniel working hard at the plate with a homerun and three RBIs, Reyes also hitting past the fences with a homer collecting an RBI, while Stuessel would take an RBI on a single and Spencer Hans would take a double.

Viterbo 11, IU-South Bend 9

Game two of the series the Titans would take a home run in the first but the V-Hawks would respond with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Keeping strong on the offensive the V-Hawks would score eight more runs in the fifth inning on for the win. 

Jomar Guzman starting for the V-Hawks would strikeout four batters across three innings letting up two hits and three runs before relief would come in. Nick Colker would come in for the win with one strikeout and allowing a single run.

At the plate, Xavier Gilmore would lead with two doubles and three RBIs followed by Reyes with a sac fly for three RBIs, Stuessel bombing a double.

Viterbo 8, IU-South Bend 2

The Titans would homer early in the first, but the V-Hawks would come back with four runs in the bottom of the inning before Daniel would homer himself then steal second in the fourth for Matt Monaghan to steal home.

Anthony Sanchez would be the lone wolf on the mound in game three pitching all seven innings with eight strikeouts, allowing three hits and two runs.

Xavier Gilmore would also homer taking two RBIs with him, while Daniel would collect an RBI as well as Hans, and Reyes.

Viterbo 22, IU-South Bend 2

The final game of the series for the V-Hawks would be a good one with three homeruns and many RBIs. Home runs coming from Stuessel, Esteban Sanchez, and Kyle Sontag. Sontag grabbing five RBIs, Stuessel three, E. Sanchez four, and Hunter Hess 4.

Brandon Jaenke would take the win on the mound with five strikeouts, three hits, and two runs over five innings.

The V-Hawks return to action Tuesday, March 18 at home for a nonconference matchup with Maranatha Baptist.
