V-Hawks Kick off Season with Split

ATCHISON, Kans. – The Viterbo University Baseball team began their season with a four game series at Benedictine College going 2-2 on the weekend. The V-Hawks start 2-2 on the season, the Ravens sit at 4-8.

 Viterbo 4, Benedictine 3

Viterbo scored a run in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and earn the opening win of the series. The two teams matches each other run for run through six innings as they each scored in the second, fifth, and sixth innings. Anthony Sanchez saddled with the win, throwing two innings in relief.

Brandon Jaenke earned the start on the mound. He wents five innings, giving up two runs off six hits with three strikeouts before the V-Hawks used one additional pitcher to finish out the game. Sanches finished off the game with three strikeouts.

At the plate, Gavin Daniel, Brett Stuessel, and Hunter Hess recorded doubles. Spencer Hans, Xavier Gilmore, Hess, and Luisangel Reyes were all credited with an RBI.

Benedictine 8, Viterbo 7

Viterbo looked to head into a sweep to open the series, scoring six runs in the fifth before benedictine answered with a run in the sixth to send the game into the seventh tied.

Kyle Burns fell to the lose in relief, throwing one inning, with two hits and runs. Adam Olson earned the start and threw three innings with one strikeout and four hits, giving up three runs. Jomar Guzman bridged the gap between Olson and Burns, giving up three runs on two hits, with three strikeouts.

Stuessel and Gilmore recorded home runs at the plate, Stuessel with one RBI and Gilmore with three. Reyes added a double and an RBI. Daniel also recorded two RBI's in the loss.

Viterbo 8, Benedictine 2

The V-Hawks took the series lead over the Ravens with a win to open up Monday's doubleheader. They broke the game open with a 6-run fifth inning while holding Benedictine to just 2 runs off 2 hits.

Jake Ouweneel picked up the win, throwing six innings and three strikeouts. Brandon Shepherd finished off the game in relief of Ouweneel.

Daniel recorded a double and an RBI, while Stuessel, Reyes, and Kyle Sontag recorded an RBI each. Roberto Echevarria and Dane Mediger collecting four more for the V-Hawks.

Benedicting 9, Viterbo 0

The Ravens shut out the V-Hawks in the series finale, Cale Beckman recording the loss.

Beckman recording two runs in four hits across four innings before Nolan Hines and Anthony Reza came in relief.

The V-Hawks only recorded two hits Gilmore with a triple.

Viterbo will continue on the road for a single game at Mount Mercy on Saturday March 1.
