V-Hawks Split Games with Warriors

FOREST CITY, Iowa. – The Viterbo University Baseball team split a pair of games with Waldorf University (Iowa) on Saturday afternoon, taking the first game 7-3, then dropping the second, 14-4. The V-Hawks now sit at 9-33 (8-10 NSAA), while the Warriors are 18-21 (8-10 NSAA).

Viterbo would start the scoring early with an RBI double from Spencer Hans in the top of the first. The Warriors responded with a sacrifice fly in the bottom to tie the game, but in the third, the V-Hawks scored four runs, as Blake Warner scored on an error, Hans recorded another RBI, and Marcus Hornacek and Kyle Sontag had back-to-back RBIs. WU answered with a two-run homer in the bottom, but it wasn't enough, and Viterbo added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh from a Cody wells RBI triple and a Hornacek RBI single.

Warner and Hans both had three hits for Viterbo, and Hornacek added a pair of RBIs. Four Warriors had hits. Cale Beckman (W, 3-4) earned the win, while Ryan Meyer (L, 5-6) recorded the loss with six strikeouts.

Waldorf scored five runs over the first two innings to start the second game, and Viterbo got on the board in the third with a Warner RBI single followed by a Hans RBI to being in Brett Stuessel. VU added another in the fourth as Ryan Mesa batted in Chance Claman, but Waldorf matched in the bottom with a solo home run. WU extended their lead in the sixth with five runs on four hits and three V-Hawk errors, and despite a Warner RBI in the top of the seventh, scored three more in the bottom of the inning on four hits.

Warner, Stuessel, and Mesa all had two hits for Viterbo, while Kolby Amaral was 4-of-5 for WU. Anthony Sanchez (L, 1-6) struck out eight batters, and Ryuya Kato (W, 1-1) recorded the win.

The series concludes tomorrow, April 21, starting at 12 PM.
