Daniel Leads V-Hawks in Win Over Comets

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The Viterbo University Baseball team took down Mayville State University (ND) in a seven inning game, 3-1, on Friday afternoon. The V-Hawks improve to 7-30 (6-7 NSAA), while the Comets fall to 9-26 (4-8 NSAA).

In the bottom of the second inning, Chance Claman doubled to left center, then Gavin Daniel singled up the middle, brining in Claman for the 1-0 lead. An RBI double for the Comets in the top of the fourth evened the score, but Brett Stuessel's single in the bottom of the frame scored Ryan Mesa, putting VU back ahead. Gavin Daniel supplied an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer, and MSU left two runners on base in the top of the seventh for the 3-1 Viterbo win.

Daniel went 3-for-3 with two RBI's on the day, and Stuessel added two runs as well. Marcus Highes had three of the Comets five hits. Anthony Sanchez (W, 1-5) struck out five batters, Gregor Farquharson (L, 2-5) retired eight, and Kyle Burns earned the save.

The V-Hawks and Comets continue their series on Saturday, with a tripleheader of seven-inning games starting at 11 am.
