V-Hawks Cap Series with Valley City with a Win

MITCHELL, SD – the Viterbo University Baseball team split a pair of games to complete their series with Valley City State University (ND) on Thursday afternoon, losing 4-5, then winning 15-8. The V-Hawks now sit at 5-27 (4-4 NSAA) on the year, while the Vikings are 11-18 (3-5 NSAA).

VCSU took control of the first game with three runs scored on two hits and an error. They would add another in the second with an RBI double, but Viterbo would answer in the third off a Brett Stuessel solo homerun. Marcus Hornacek then brought home Jerrod Gurden on an RBI grounder in the fourth. Stuessel hit his second homer if the game in the fifth, tying the game at 4-4 as he bought in Spencer Hans. However, after Viterbo left two on in the sixth, an error allowed the Vikings to score and take the final lead, 5-4.

Stuessel led the V-Hawks with two hits and three RBIs, while Garrett Heying also recorded two hits. Jamel Chabot was 3-of-4 for Valley City. Jake Ouweneel (L, 0-6) struck out three batters, while Riley Resnick (W, 1-0) had two.

VCSU would take the first lead of the second game as well, scoring on an error in the bottom of the second, but a Cody Wells single in the top of the third brought in Stuessel and Chance Claman for the lead. The Vikings scored four in the bottom of the frame, but Ryan Mesa and and Claman each responded with RBIs in the top of the fourth. A wild pitch allowed VCSU to score in the bottom of the fourth, bringing the score to 4-6. The V-Hawks had a huge fifth inning, scoring five runs on five hits, including a pair of RBIs from Wells and Claman, and they would match that again in the sixth, with Mesa and Stuessel each bringing in two runs this time. Valley City scored once in the bottom of the sixth to bring the score to 14-7, but Stuessel extended the lead again in the eighth on an RBI double. VCSU recorded three hits in the ninth, but only managed a single run.

Wells led the V-Hawks, going 5-of-6 with four RBIs, while Mesa and Stuessel each had three hits. Three Vikings had two hits. Brandon Jaenke (W, 2-5) earned the win with 11 K's, while Jay Mendez (L, 0-3) recorded the loss.
