COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Viterbo University Baseball team lost two games to Columbia College (Mo.) on Saturday afternoon, 6-1 and 9-3. The V-Hawk now sit 1-18 on the year.
Blake Warner started the first game with a single in the first, and while Gavin Daniel and Ryder Mortensen were walked in the second, Viterbo would not score until the third off a Spencer Hans RBI single. The Cougars added their own run in the bottom of the frame. CC then took a commanding lead in the fifth with five runs on three hits, including two home runs. Mortensen then singled in the seventh, but could not muster another run.
Warner led the V-Hawks with two hits, and Cody Well scored, recording one hit. Six Cougars recorded a hit. Cale Beckman (L, 0-3) struck out four batters, while Kam Dohogne (W, 2-2) recorded six in a complete game.
In the second game, Columbia used a big first inning with two homers to go up 4-0. Kyle Sontag singled in the fourth, but CC extended their lead with three more runs in the bottom of the frame. A Brett Stuessel RBI started a hot fifth inning that included RBIs from Barner and Wells to bring the score to 3-7. However, they could not keep the momentum, as two more Cougar hits led to two more Cougar runs in the sixth, en route to the 9-3 win.
Stuessel had two hits and an RBI, and Garret Heying had a hit in his lone plate appearance. Tyler Renn was 3-of-4 with two RBIs. Anthony Sanchez (L, 0-2) pitched 3.0 innings, and Pierce Hartmann (W, 2-0) posted eight K's in 4.1 IP.
Viterbo returns to action on March 9 for a series at Midland (Neb.).
