V-Hawks Capture First Win of the Season

OTTAWA, Kans. – The Viterbo University Baseball team captured their first win of the season Saturday afternoon, 1-0 at Ottawa University (Kans.) in the second game of a double header. Viterbo lost the first game, 0-5. Viterbo now sits at 1-7 on the year, while the Braves improve to 6-4.

Gavin Daniel recorded a single to lead off the game, but the Braves turned two to prevent a score. Carson Trumpold and Ryan mesa each had hits in the third, but it would be OU that would score n the bottom on the frame, two runs on three hits. They extended the lead with one more run in the fourth and two in the fifth, while the V-Hawks were unable to manage a baserunner. The V-Hawks stranded a runner on base in the sixth and seventh, but lost, 5-0.

Mesa led the V-Hawks with two hits, and two others had one. Two Braves recorded two hits. Joe Nelan (L, 0-2) recorded the loss with five strikeouts, while Jurgen Zwitzer (W, 2-0) had five in the win.

Blake Warner singled in the first, but he would be the only V-Hawk to reach base in the first four innings. In the fifth, Cody Lozano was hit by a pitch, and after Camden Smith Pinch ran for him, Chad Herrera's single advanced him to third. He reached home on a wild pitch, putting Viterbo ahead. The V-Hawks did not manage another baserunner, but did not need one as they secured the 1-0 win.

Each team recorded two hits, though Viterbo only left two runners on base to seven from the Braves. Adam Olson (W, 1-1) recorded the complete game win with three strikeouts, while Diego Quinonez (L, 1-1) recorded the loss with seven K's.

Viterbo returns to action on Friday, February 16 against Northwestern College (Iowa) in Joplin, Mo.
