V-Hawks Start Season at #25 Freed-Hardeman

HENDERSON, Tenn. – The Viterbo University Baseball team started their 2024 season at #25 Freed-Hardeman University (Tenn.) on Friday afternoon, dropping both games of a double header, 11-2 and 8-7. The V-Hawks are now 0-2 while the Lions are 2-0.

The V-Hawks started the first inning strong, as Brett Stuessel singled through the right side, and later scored on an error. However, the Lions scored one of their own after Brandon Jaenke walked in a run. FHU extended their lead with three runs in the second on an RBI single and two-RBI homerun, and after a Blake Warner solo homer, added three more in the third. The fourth inning saw another two-RBI single and two-RBI home run for the Lions, and while the V-Hawks got runners on base in each of the next three innings, they would not score.

Warner went 2-for-3 on the day, while Stuessel also added two hits. Three batters for the Lions had two hits. Brandon Jaenke (L, 0-1) recorded the loss, with three strikeouts in 3.1 IP, while Colton Huntt (W, 1-0) earned the win striking out nine batters over 5.0 IP.

Freed-Hardeman recorded two sacrifices in the first to go up 2-0, and after two quick innings, Blake Warner scored on an error. The Lions hit two home runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead, but VU responded in the top of the fifth as Warner's double brought in Stuessel and Gavin Daniel, and Spencer Hans brought in Warner. A Lions triple in the bottom of the frame brought the score to 7-4. FHU made it 8-4 in the seventh, but the V-Hawks began to rally in the ninth. Daniel and Hunter Hess were each walked, then Daniel got home as Stuessel reached on a fielders choice. Jerrod Gurden's single scored Warner and Stuessel, but with the tying run on base, Gurden was caught stealing. Warner went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Gurden was 2-for-3. Jordan Carter went 3-of-3 for the Lions. Anthony Sanchez (L, 1-0) recorded the loss, while Colton Bryant (W, 1-0) earned the win with seven strikeouts and Evan Koob took the save.

Viterbo returns to action on Saturday, February 3 with two more games at Freed-Hardeman.
