V-Hawks Split with Waldorf on Senior Day

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Baseball team finished their regular season with a doubleheader split against Waldorf University (Iowa). Viterbo took game one 9-5 while Waldorf took game two 16-12. The V-Hawks end the regular season 15-29 (12-16 NSAA), while the Warriors end at 21-24 (16-12 NSAA).

Waldorf kicked off the first game with a two run homer in the top of the first, but Viterbo responded in the bottom of the first with a Spencer Hans RBI to score Kendal Hofer, and a Frankie McGuire two-RBI double that brought in Hans and Blake Warner. Warner would then collect two RBIs of his own in the second on a single that brought in Hofer and Gavin Daniel, and Warner scored would score on a balk. Ryan Brooks batted in two runs with a single to up the lead to 8-2. The Warriors smacked another home run in the fourth, this time scoring three runs. Daniel grounded out into an RBI in the fifth to bring the final score to 9-5.

Brooks and Warner each had two RBIs on two hits, and McGuire had two as well. Robert Gurney had three RBIs on his lone hit. Ben Strassman (W, 1-6) earned his first win of the season, and Skyler Yarborough (L, 2-5) recorded the loss.

WU scored another two runs to start the second game, on an RBI double and sacrifice fly. They added seven more runs in the third on four hits and a Viterbo error. Warner got the V-Hawks on the board with an RBI double in the fourth. Remy Stern had an RBI single of his own, followed by a Chad Herrera two-RBI double and a Hofer two-RBI double to close the gap to 7-9. Five more hits in the top of the fifth led to six more runs and a 7-15 lead for the Warriors. Conley O'Keefe and Stern would reach home in the bottom of the sixth on a Daniel single, and Herrera found home another Warner RBI. Marcus Hornacek had two RBIs on a single to bring the score to 12-15. Waldorf added one final run on a sacrifice fly to leave the final score at 12-16.

Daniel, Hofer, Warner, Hornacek, and Herrera each had two RBIs for the V-Hawks and Gurney had five RBIs on two hits for Waldorf. Anthony Sanchez (L, 2-4) had two strikeouts in 3.0 innings and Zach Meyer (W, 5-1) had five over five innings.

The teams look ahead to the NSAA Conference Tournament next weekend in Dickinson, ND.
