V-Hawks Split Day 1 of Conference Doubleheader

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The Viterbo University Baseball team competed in a conference doubleheader against the Waldorf University Warriors at home on Friday. The Warriors took game one 3-2, while the V-Hawks dominated game two 7-4. The V-Hawks now hold a 14-28 (11-15 NSAA), while Waldorf advances to 20-23 overall (15-11 NSAA).

Both teams fought to get on the board before the Warriors managed to score at the top of the sixth. Waldorf continued to grow their lead with two RBIs in the sixth (0-3). Viterbo answered in the bottom of seventh with Hunter Hess recording an RBI allowing Spencer Hans to score (1-3). Viterbo put another run on the board with a Kendal Hofer double to right field, advancing Gavin Daniel to third and Cody Lozano scoring (2-3). Both teams went scoreless in the ninth, giving Waldorf a win with the final score being 2-3.  

Daniels went 2-for-4 at the plate. Ryan Webster went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Jackson Burke recorded the loss, while Adam Olson pitched five strikeouts in three innings. Ryan Meyer recorded the win, with Trevor Brace recording the save.

Ryan Brooks put the V-Hawks on the board early with 2 RBIs, having Ryder Mortenson and Carson Trumpold score (2-0). Waldorf answered back at the top of the third with a single to advance to second and an RBI scoring (2-1). Viterbo expanded their lead with Spencer Hans being walked, advancing both Blake Warner to second and Kendal Hofer to third, and Gavin Daniels scoring (3-1); Marcus Hornacek singled to center field, resulting in an RBI with Hofer scoring in the bottom of the third. An RBI by Trumpold followed by a sacrifice RBI by Hans helped the V-Hawks to stretch their lead to 4-1 going into the fourth inning. The Warriors added to the board by an RBI to 4-2 at the top of the fourth inning. Waldorf continued to add to the board with two RBIs at the top of the fifth, resulting in a score of 6-4. Hornacek was able to score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 7-4. Both teams were unable to add to the board, giving the V-Hawks the win with a final score 7-4.

Hornacek went 2-for-3 at the plated, while Brooks had 2 RBIs. Cale Beckman recorded the win pitching 4.2 innings with two strikeouts. Anthony Sanchez recorded the save, pitching one inning with one strikeout. Jamie Olson recorded the loss, pitching five innings with six strikeouts. 


The V-Hawks will return to action on Saturday, April 29 in another doubleheader vs. Waldorf at 1 and 4 p.m. cst.
