Viterbo Falls to NSAA Leader Dakota State

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Baseball team competed against the Dakota State University Trojans in a doubleheader on Friday. The V-Hawks fell to the Trojans in both matchups, 2-3 and 1-4 leaving Dakota State undefeated in conference play. The V-Hawks move to 8-21 overall (6-8 NSAA) while the Trojans rise to 23-12 overall (14-0 NSAA).

The first inning in game one would give the V-Hawks a head start with Kendal Hofer scoring off of an error by the Trojans. Carson Trumpold recorded an RBI advancing teammate Marcus Hornacek to home plate. Viterbo would go into inning two leading 2-0. The V-Hawks retired the Trojan's first three batters in innings two and three to keep the lead heading into inning four. The next four innings remained scoreless for both teams heading into the top of the eighth. The V-Hawks left bases loaded entering the bottom of the eighth. A double by Walker Hultgren allowed the Trojans to tie the game 2-2 going into the ninth inning. A walk by Trumpold gave the V-Hawks hope but Dakota State managed three outs before they were able to score. Two walks and an error by Viterbo left the Trojans with bases loaded before a balk by pitcher Alex Danen allowed Chris Burke to score, ending game one 2-3.

 Hofer went 3 for 5 at the plate. Danen recorded the loss pitching the final inning of the game. JD Kirchner recorded the win for Dakota State pitching a total of 4 innings and striking out 5 batters.

Dakota State got off to a head start in game two with two runs scored. The teams went scoreless in inning two before Hofer recorded an RBI going into the fourth inning, 1-2. The Trojans retired the first three batters in the top of the fifth and stretched their lead adding two runs with Burke earning two RBIs. The V-Hawks got on base but couldn't score in the final two innings of the game, falling to Dakota State 1-4.

Pitcher Cale Beckman recorded the loss pitching 5 innings and striking out 4 batters. Sam Tyrpa recorded the win pitching all 7 innings and striking out 4 batters.

The V-Hawks return to action on Saturday, April 8th in another doubleheader vs. the Trojans at 12:00 and 3:00 PM CST.
