V-Hawks and Blue Hawks Split Doubleheader

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Baseball split games in their North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) home doubleheader against Dickinson State University (ND) on Saturday. The matchup was moved from Dickinson to Viterbo due to weather. Viterbo won the first game 5-3, while the Dickinson won the second 8-4. The V-Hawks are now 3-18 (1-5 NSAA) and the Blue Hawks are 12-13 (4-2 NSAA).

In the first game, Dickinson would start the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the second, on a pass ball and RBI double. Viterbo responded in the top of the third with a Kendal Hofer solo home run, and while DSU added a solo shot of their own ion the bottom of the fourth, the top of the fifth would be a big one for VU. Ryan Brooks singled to score Marcus Hornacek, and Chad Herrera's single would bring in Hofer and Brooks for the 4-3 lead. Hornacek would single in the top of the eighth to score Mesa as an insurance run, and the V-Hawks would win 5-3.

Herrera led the V-Hawks offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBI's, and Hofer added a 2-for-4 showing with an RBI and two runs scored. Balas Buckmaster went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two scored runs for the Blue Hawks. Cale Beckman (1-1) earned the win with eight strikeouts, and Dominic LeBlanc recorded his first save of the year. Jonathan Lerma (L, 1-3) had three strikeouts in five innings.

In the late game, Viterbo kept the momentum going with a Herrera single to score Hofer, and Hornacek single to bring in Herrera and Hunter Hess. Dickinson added one of their own on a Wyatt Wilharm sacrifice fly, and a wild pitch in the bottom of the second added another Blue Hawk run. Frankie McGuire scored in the top of the third, and a solo home run by Dickinson in the bottom of the fourth brought the score to 4-3. DSU took the lead in the bottom, of the fifth with an RBI single and a Cade Ostenson 2-RBI homer. They added to the lead in the sixth with another 2 run homerun, and would win 4-8.

Hornacek went 1-for-1 with two RBI's and two walks for Viterbo, and Herrera added another RBI. Kaiden Reeve went 1-for-1 with two RBI's for DSU. R. Gill (L, 1-3) had five K's, while Alex Stephens (W, 1-0) earned with win.
