V-Hawks win one in four-game series vs. Dakota State

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Baseball team took the field at the Viterbo Outdoor Athletic Complex this weekend to take on the Dakota State University Trojans. The V-hawks fell to the Trojans the first three games but finished strong winning the final game of the four-game series.

Game one: Viterbo – 1, Dakota State – 9

• The Trojans started off strong out-scoring the V-hawks 4-0 in the first four innings.
• In the bottom of the 5th inning Cody Wells hit a home run to give the V-hawks their first run on the board.
• Dakota State answered by scoring 4 runs in the 6th inning and finishing with a home run in the 9th inning.
• Key players: Cody Wells - one home run; Kyle Gilbertson - pitched 5.2 innings with 11 strikeouts facing 30 total batters

Game two: Viterbo – 2, Dakota State – 3

• Dakota State scored their first run in the top of the first inning. The V-hawks came back strong with a single RBI from Cole Benson to tie the game heading into the second inning.
• Freshman Carter Olek contributed a single RBI to help Viterbo take the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning.
• It became a dual until the 7th inning where the Trojans outscored the V-hawks 2-0 making the final score 3-2.
• Key players: Cole Benson - one RBI; Carter Olek - one RBI; Brandon Jaenke - pitched 6.2 innings with 10 strikeouts facing 27 total batters

Game three: Viterbo – 2, Dakota State – 5

• The V-hawks and the Trojans had a slow start to game three with the Trojans delivering the first runs on the board in the 4th inning leading 2-0.
• Dakota State kept their momentum going in the 5th inning scoring another 2 runs.
• Viterbo answered in the 8th inning with RBIs from Cody Wells and Myles Zimdars putting 2 points on the board.
• The Trojans scored a single run in the top of the 9th inning and the V-hawks couldn't pull it off in the bottom of the 9th leaving the Trojans with the win.
• Key players: Cody Wells - one RBI; Myles Zimdars - one RBI; Marcus Hornacek - two walks

Game four: Viterbo – 2, Dakota State – 1

• Viterbo came out strong scoring 2 runs in the first inning with a double RBI from Blake Warner.
• The V-hawks held the Trojans to 0 runs until the top of the fourth inning when a home run from the Trojans brought their first run on the board
• Viterbo and Dakota State held each other to 0 runs through the 7th inning bringing the final score 2-1.
• Key players: Blake Warner - Double, two RBIs; Alec Danen - pitched 1 inning with 1 strick out facing 3 total batters
