Viterbo Baseball drops weekend series to Madonna University

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The Viterbo University Baseball team went 1-2 in their weekend series to Madonna University at neutral Lenz Field. 

Game 1 - Viterbo 6, Madonna 9

It came down to the last play, but Viterbo was on the wrong end of a 9-6 defeat to Madonna University on Saturday. Madonna trailed 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Madonna homered on a 1-1 count, scoring four runs.

Kyle Gilbertson started the game for Viterbo University V-Hawks Varsity. The right-hander lasted five and a third innings, allowing five hits and five runs while striking out two. Brandon Jaenke took the loss for Viterbo. Jaenke lasted one-third of an inning, allowing one hit and four runs.  

Despite the loss, the V-Hawks did collect five hits and Marcus Hornacek went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the team in hits.

Game 2 - Viterbo 4, Madonna 1

The V-Hawks got things moving in the second inning. Cole Benson singled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run.

Eric Taylor was credited with the victory for Viterbo. The righty lasted seven innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out six and walking one.

The V-Hawks also tallied one home run on the day. Kendal Hofer had a homer in the third inning.

Viterbo capitalized on their hits, earning four runs on six hits on the day. Keaton Westhoff went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the V-Hawks in hits.

Game 3 - Viterbo 2, Madonna 3

Both teams were strong on the mound on Sunday, but Madonna had the edge at the plate in a victory over the V-Hawks. Ben Strassman started the game for Viterbo and recorded 17 outs.

Strassman went five and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out seven, and walking one.

Blake Warner led the way with two hits in three at bats for Viterbo.

The V-Hawks will resume play on Saturday, March 12 for a doubleheader weekend series against Columbia (Mo.) before beginning conference play the following weekend. The first pitch will take place at 1:00 p.m. CST. Follow the action on viterboathletics.com or by following us on social media.
