FOREST CITY, Iowa - The Viterbo University baseball team (9-14, 3-7 NSAA) split the doubleheader at Waldorf on Tuesday. The V-Hawks lost game one but redeemed themselves to defeat the Warriors in game two.
Game 1 - Viterbo 9, Waldorf 17
- Waldorf got the early 3-0 lead after a home run and double in the bottom of the first. Darek Dieckman (SR/Ladysmith, Wis.) flew out to center field in the top of the second inning to bring in Cole Benson (SR/Hastings, Minn.). The Warriors added a couple of scores in the bottom of the second to make it 7-1.
- Ryan Ellingson (SR/La Crescent, Minn.) singled to advance Remy Stern (SO) home and then Braxton Ghelfi (SR/West Salem, Wis.) reached first on a fielding error to bring Ellingson in shortly after.
- Darrian Escobar-Winter (SO/Falcon, Colo.) homered to left field in the top of the fourth inning followed by a 2-run homer from Benson in the top of the fifth. Ellingson earned his second RBI of the game after singling to right to send Garrett Poblick (SO/Lake Arrowhead, Calif.) around the bags.
- The final two V-Hawk scores of the game came as home runs in the top of the eighth from Kevin Brandt (SR/Janesville, Wis.) and the top of the ninth from Dieckman.
- Four different V-Hawks homered in the game, despite losing. Viterbo left 12 runners on base.
- The V-Hawks tallied 17 total hits and only committed two errors on defense.

Game 2 - Viterbo 7, Waldorf 5
- The V-Hawks jumped ahead early, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning thanks to a shared RBI effort from Nolan Glunz (SR/Woodbury, Minn.), Zach Braun (JR/Hartford, Wis.), Adam Helgeson (JR/West Salem, Wis.), Poblick, and Benson, each with one. Viterbo finished the half-inning with four hits and three left on base.
- Waldorf scored two in the bottom of the sixth after a double down the left-field line and a single up the middle. Kyle Gilbertson (SR/La Crosse, Wis.) was able to strike out the next two batters to get out of the inning with two left on base.
- Glunz got his third RBI of the night off a double to left-center to drive in Escobar-Winter and Helgeson in the top of the seventh.
- Pitcher Ben Strassman (JR) was brought in for Gilbertson to close things out but after three scores from Waldorf made the score 7-5, Rossman entered the game to close things out.
- Viterbo finished with 9 hits and only one error in the game.

The Viterbo Baseball team will host a JV game tomorrow, April 7 at 2:00 p.m. against Riverland Community College at the Viterbo Outdoor Athletics Complex. After that, the V-Hawks will be on the road at Dickinson State for a weekend series starting Saturday, April 10. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. CST.
