V-Hawks Fall to Vikings in NSAA Tournament First Round

DICKINSON, ND – The Viterbo University Softball team, seeded No. 7, played their first game of the NSAA Softball Conference Tournament on Friday evening, falling No. 2 Valley City State University (ND), 15-4. The V-Hawks fall to 9-39 on the year, while the Vikings improve to 26-20.

The V-Hawks would start the game strong, as Makayla Nortman and Marissa Carter-Olson were walked and hit by a pitch, and Amanda Bogdonovich brought them all home with a 3 RBI home run. The Vikings would even the score in the bottom of the first on a wild pitch, an RBI single, and an RBI double. They then added three more in the third on three hits and two V-Hawks errors. Alina Garstka singled in the top of the fourth, and advanced to third, but was unable to reach home. VCSU extended the lead to 10-3 in the fourth inning on four hits and an error. VU was able to add one run in the top of the sixth inning, as Garstka singled, then reached home on a Megan Jardine RBI, but an RBI single and grand slam from Valley City ended the game, 15-4.

Bogdonovich and Garstka led the V-Hawks with two hits apiece, and, while Nortman, Jardine, and Courtney Denton each had one. Four Vikings had three hits. Emily Roberts (L, 1-10) recorded the loss, while Maddy Zander (W, 14-7) earned the win with seven strikeouts.

Viterbo will play the loser of Mayville State (ND) and Bellevue (Neb.) in a losers out game on Saturday, May 4 at 4 PM.
