Athletic Training

Viterbo University Athletics has affiliated with Gundersen Health System Sports Medicine to provide state-of-the-art sports medicine care for our student-athletes. This affiliation allows the University to have benefited from the services of Gundersen Health System’s Athletic Training Staff during the academic year.

Services for VU Student-Athletes:

  • Injury Prevention, Evaluation, and Treatment
  • Rehabilitation of Athletic Injuries
  • Emergency Care
  • Concussion Management
  • Assist in Referrals to Outside Care

Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC) are allied medical professionals, recognized by the American Medical Association, whose work focuses on the prevention, recognition, evaluation, emergency care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. It is the responsibility of the AT staff to insure the student-athletes safe return to participation after an injury by facilitating comprehensive care. Each of Gundersen Health System’s ATCs is Certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association, Board of Certification, and licensed to practice in the State of Wisconsin.

Gundersen Health System Sports Medicine employs a group of full-time ATCs who provide outreach services to 28 Coulee Region schools.

The special affiliation between VU and GHS allows streamlined access to Sports Medicine Fellowship Trained Orthopedic Surgeons and Family Practice physicians when necessary. Additionally, VU athletes benefit from receiving some of the injury rehabilitation services from GHS's experienced physical therapists.

The athletic trainers may be able to assist with special consultations with other medical specialties such as Podiatry, Urgent Care, Family Practice, Psychiatry, and Neurosurgery-thus providing comprehensive care and medical education to the VU student-athlete. Although our AT staff is affiliated with GHS Sports Medicine, they also have built a relationship with Mayo Clinic Sports Med to be able to accommodate varying insurance coverages.

Athletic Training Services

Hours/Services: Typical hours during the school year are 12-6pm, Monday – Friday. However, the AT staff builds its schedule around the practice and games schedule of the teams. Therefore, these hours are subject to change based on availability, event coverage, and seasonal sport’s needs. The hours are posted weekly on the door of the AT Room and on their Instagram page (@viterbo.athletic.training).  The AT staff is available for most practice sessions and all in-season games. The AT staff gives priority to in-season athletes but will see all out-of-season athletes on an appointment basis. Athletes may make an appointment using the Microsoft Bookings application here.

Facilities/Equipment: The primary Athletic Training Room (ATR) is located in Varsity Athletic Center. The ATR is equipped with ultrasound, electrical stimulation, hot and cold therapy, and other specialized rehabilitation tools and devices. There is a secondary ATR at the Outdoor Athletic Complex to accommodate our outdoor athletes during their competitive seasons.
