V-Hawks Conclude Regular Season at Waldorf

FOREST CITY, Iowa – The Viterbo University Softball team lost a pair of high scoring games to Waldorf University (Iowa) to end their 2024 regular season on Monday evening, 7-9 and 8-9. The V-Hawks fall to 9-38 (5-19 NSAA) on the year, while the Warriors improve to 9-27 (8-15 NSAA).

The V-Hawks started the first game hot, as in the top of the first Megan Jardine's triple would bring home Sydney Haakenson, then Marissa Carter-Olson batted in Jardine. The Warriors evened the score in the bottom of the second with a pair of RBI singles, but the V-Hawks took back the lead in the top of the fourth on a Carter-Olson solo homerun. Viterbo followed that with a Natalie Martin RBI single, an Alexis Watson RBI double, and a Makayla Nortman two-RBI single to go up 7-2. However, Waldorf scored seven runs in the fifth inning, coming on three hits and two VU errors. Amanda Bogdonovich recorded a single in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough to rally, and Viterbo fell, 9-7.

Bogdonovich was 3-of-4 for the V-Hawks, and Nortman and Carter-Olson each supplied a pair of hits too. Four Warriors recorded a pair of hits. Bogdonovich (L, 2-3) recorded the loss, while Maddie Dalke (W, 6-11) earned the win.

The V-Hawks would be the first on the board in the second game as well, as Carter-Olson singled up the middle in the top of the first, scoring Nortman. Waldorf tied the game in the third on an RBI single, but in the fourth, Courtney Denton gave the advantage back to Viterbo on a Haleigh Zanoni RBI. Martin then scored on a Nortman sacrifice fly. Viterbo expanded the lead in the fifth as Makella Jacobs reached home on a Denton single, Bogdonovich scored on a Martin sacrifice fly, and Alina Garstka homered, scoring three runs. WU matched the five runs in the bottom of the frame on four hits, then went up 9-8 in the bottom of the sixth after three straight RBI hits.

Nortman, Jardine, Denton, and Zanoni all recorded multiple hits for the V-Hawks, while Brooke Hickey had three for the Warriors. Alexis Watson (L, 5-16) recorded the loss, while Makenzie Cope (W, 2-1) posted the win.

The V-Hawks return to action on Friday, May 3 at 4 PM against Valley City State (ND) in the first round of the NSAA Conference Tournament, hosted by Dickinson State (ND).
