V-Hawks Split Games with Trojans

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Softball team split a pair of games at home against Dakota State University (SD) on Saturday afternoon, winning the early game, 9-6, then losing the nightcap, 5-6. The V-Hawks now sit at 7-28 (4-10 NSAA), while the Trojans improve to 6-23 (3-11 NSAA).

The Trojans took an early lead with an RBI single in the top of the first, but the V-Hawks responded in the bottom of the inning with a two-RBI double from Marissa Carter Olson. DSU tied the game in the second with an RBI single. They then took the lead in the fourth with three runs scored on three hits, and extended the advantage to 6-2 in the fifth on a sacrifice bunt. Viterbo then took back the lead with a huge fifth inning. Grace Elton walked to bring home Megan Jardine. Then Amanda Bogdonovich singled, which scored Sydney Haakenson. Kate Olsen followed that with an RBI single bringing in Carter-Olson. Finally, Courtney Denton recorded an RBI walk. After switching pitchers, Bogdonovich reached home on a passed ball, Alina Gartska scored on an error, and Denton scored the seventh run on the inning on a Makayla Nortman single. Dakota State recorded a hit in the next two innings, but were unable to score.

Jardine and Nortman were each 2-of-4 for the V-Hawks, while Carter-Olson led with two RBIs. Hannah McFarland had three hits for DSU. Amanda Bogdonovich (W, 2-2) earned the win, Alexis Watson had six strikeouts, and Maycee Bricker (L, 0-10) recorded the loss.

The V-Hawks took the first lead of the second game, scoring in the bottom of the first on a Carter-Olson sacrifice fly. Dakota State went ahead with two runs on an hit and an error in the top of the second, but Bogdonovich evened the score again in the third with an RBI single. In the fifth, the Trojans took advantage again on an RBI single, and extended that again with three hits leading to three runs on the sixth. The V-Hawks began to rally in the bottom of the sixth, with back-to-back-to-back RBI doubles from Nortman, Jardine, and Haakenson. However, the rally ended there, as Viterbo left two on base in the seventh.

Nortman had three hits in the game, while Jardine, Haakenson, and Carter-Olson each had two. Delaney Barrett was 3-of-3 for the Trojans, and also earned the win on the mound. Jada Brown had her first have, and Nortman recorded the loss.
