SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The Viterbo University Men's Soccer Team, receiving votes in the most recent NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, played at Morningside University (Iowa) on Sunday afternoon and went home with a 1-0 win. The V-Hawks extend their undefeated record to 10-0, while the Mustangs drop to 3-4-2.
The first half started off even, with both teams getting chances. In the 34th minute, a Conner Erdmann corner would find Benian Yao for a flick, which Sammy Ankaoglu was able to finish to give Viterbo a 1-0 lead. Over the course of the half, the V-Hawks worked to get 7 shots and 6 corners.
Similar to the first, the second half stayed neck and neck. The teams battled, Morningside recording 3 shots that were all saved by Viterbo keeper Ernesto Ascenzo, the reigning Continental Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. The V-Hawks were able to get off 6 shots, adding to their game total of 13. At the end of 90 minutes, the half remained scoreless, allowing Viterbo to walk away with a 1-0 win.
The V-Hawks outshot the Mustangs 13-6, but each had five shots on goal. Viterbo also took 10 corner kicks to Morningside's three. Ascenzo (W, 9-0) recorded the clean sheet with four saves, and Oliver Melander (L, 0-1) had five saves.
The V-Hawks look to extend their undefeated season at Concordia Moorhead (Minn.) on October 9th at 3:00 PM CST.
