MAYVILLE, N.D. – The Viterbo Men's Basketball team (8-8) squared off against the Comets of Mayville State University (9-5) on Saturday night to close out their weekend road trip. The V-Hawks came out victorious, 63-60, in what was a very close matchup.
The V-Hawks led by as many as six points through a majority of the first half, but the Comets were able to close the gap and even take a lead near the end of the half. Down 32-34, Jack Monis worked through contact and got an and-one to tie the game at 34 with 38 seconds left. Viterbo took a small lead coming out of halftime, but the Comets took the momentum and led by as many as eight points with ten minutes left in the game. The V-Hawks chipped away and took the lead, 61-60, with 1:13 left to play in the game on a Noah Fredrickson three-pointer. That turned out to be the game-winning shot as the V-Hawk defense did not allow a bucket in the last three minutes of the game.
Monis led the V-Hawks with a double-double, scoring 23 points and adding 10 rebounds. Brady Polk had a solid all-around performance, contributing 10 points, seven assists, and six rebounds. With the win, the V-Hawks improved to 2-1 in NSAA play. The Viterbo Men's Basketball team will return to R.W. Beggs Sr. Gymnasium on Friday to face Valley City State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM CST.
