Men's Basketball puts up big second half to defeat UW-Whitewater

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The Viterbo University Men's Basketball team hosted the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at home on Tuesday night. The V-Hawks defeated the Warhawks 86-77.

Viterbo went into the locker room at halftime trailing 31-38. Despite a 15 point deficit almost halfway through the second half for the V-Hawks, Noah Fredrickson (Gr. - Onalaska, Wis.) sunk a three followed by a layup to cut the Warhawk lead to ten. Whitewater answered with five points of their own, but Fredrickson made another three and followed that up with an and-one to put the V-Hawks right back in it with ten minutes remaining in regulation.

Shortly after, Nolan Martin (Jr. - Arcadia, Wis.) hit a three-pointer to cut Whitewater's lead to six. With momentum on Viterbo's side, Nicholas Malovrh (Sr. - Marshfield, Wis.) sank a three to tie the game at 65. Jack Monis (Jr. - Oconomowoc, Wis.) took over, creating nine points in a row for the V-Hawks to put them up 76-69 with three minutes in regulation. Whitewater would fail to regain the lead, leading to the V-Hawk win.

Viterbo shot 70.4 percent from the floor and 50 percent from behind the arc in the second half. They were also nearly perfect from behind the charity stripe, converting 13 of 14 free throws. The V-Hawks outscored Whitewater 55-39 in the second half of play.

Monis had a career-high 29 points. He also contributed a team-high seven rebounds in the game. Fredrickson's big second half led to 18 points. Robert Cunitz (Sr. - Kendall, Wis.) had a solid 14 points and five rebounds.

The V-Hawks (4-4) will be off until December 4th when they will travel to Waldorf to begin North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) conference play. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. CST. Follow the action on viterboathletics.com or by following us on social media.
