Warriors Take Down V-Hawks in Round One

DICKINSON, ND – The Viterbo University Baseball team, seeded No. 4 in the North star Athletic Association (NSAA) conference baseball tournament fell in the first round to Waldorf University (Iowa), 9-8 on Friday night. The V-Hawks drop to 11-37 on the year, while the Warriors improve to 20-26.

The Warriors took the first lead of the game with an RBI grounder in the top of the first, but the V-Hawks answered with a Ryan Mesa two-RBI double in the bottom of the second that brought home Garrett Heying and Camden Smith. Waldorf took the advantage back in the top of the third with three runs scored on four hits, but the V-Hawks had a response yet again, as Spencer Hans tripled in the bottom of the fifth to bring in Brett Stuessel and Gavin Daniel, and Marcus Hornacek single to bring in Hans. In the top of the seventh, a V-Hawk errors allowed WU to even the score at 5-5, but Hans singled to bring in Gavin Daniel, followed by a single from Kyle Sontag to score both Hans and Blake Warner. However, Waldorf has the last say, as in the top of the eighth inning, they would bring in four more runs to go up one for good, winning 9-8.

Hans, Sontag, and Daniel each had two hits for the V-Hawks. Hans also added three RBIs. Three different Warriors also had a pair of hits. Kyle Burns (L, 1-2) recorded the loss, while Trevor Brace (W, 2-2) earned the win and Reno Morehouse (Sv, 3) secured the save.

The V-Hawks will battle the loser of No. 7 Mayville State and No. 3 Valley City State in a losers out game on Saturday at 7 PM.
