Viterbo Splits Conference Pair at Home

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Baseball team took on the Valley City State University Vikings in a doubleheader on Monday. The V-Hawks fell to the Vikings in game one 4-6 but redeemed themselves to a 7-2 win in game two. Viterbo rises to 8-19 (6-6 NSAA) while VCSU falls to 6-22 (2-10 NSAA).

Both teams started out hot with the Vikings scoring two runs off four hits in the top of the first. Viterbo answered back with two sacrifice fly RBIs by Spencer Hans and Marcus Hornacek bringing home teammates Kendal Hofer and Hunter Hess. The next at bat would give Frankie McGuire an RBI allowing Chad Herrera to score going into inning two 3-2. Both teams would go scoreless until a home run by Valley City's Judson Seliskar put the Vikings up 3-4 at the top of the fifth. A double by Hans in the seventh inning brought home Hess to tie the game 4-4 going into the eighth. Valley City would finish the game scoring one at the top of the eighth inning and adding another Seliskar home run in the ninth bringing the final score to 4-6.

Hans finished game one with 2 RBIs. Ben Strassman recorded the loss striking out 4 batters. Viking's Seliskar recorded 4 RBIs. Brooks Brown recorded the win and Riley Resnick had the save each striking out 3 batters.

Viterbo came out strong in game two retiring the first three hitters. At the plate Hornacek, Carson Trumpold, and Gavin Daniel each recorded an RBI leading 3-0 going into the second inning. The V-Hawks got on the board again in inning four with Ryan Brooks scoring on an error by the Vikings second baseman going into inning five 4-0. The V-Hawks stayed hot with a home run by Trumpold allowing two more runs on the board for Viterbo. Daniel scored on a fielder's choice RBI by Hofer to end the fifth inning 7-0. A Drew Nixon home run allowed the Vikings to put two runs on the board before finishing the game 7-2.

Conley O'Keefe went 3 for 3 at the plate while Trumpold recorded 3 RBIs. Anthony Sanchez pitched all seven innings recording the win with a total of 9 strikeouts. Adam Thompson recorded the loss with 0 strikeouts and 2 walks.

The V-Hawks will travel to South Dakota to take on Dakota State University on Friday, April 7th at 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM and Saturday at 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM CST.
