Bruins open NSAA play with sweep over V-Hawks

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bellevue University softball team ran its winning streak to eight games on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep over Viterbo University to open up North Star Athletic Association action at Roy Smith Field. 

The Bruins, who run-ruled both games in six innings, with each game ending on extra-base hits by Lauren Jurek, improved to 16-8 on the season and 2-0 in the NSAA. Viterbo fell to 1-15 overall and 0-2 in league play. Jurek finished the doubleheader 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, and three RBIs. 

The two teams will complete the four-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader tomorrow (Mar. 27) at Roy Smith Field. 

Game 1: Bellevue 10, Viterbo 2 (6 innings)

The Bruins started the game and ended the contest with home runs and used a five-run fourth inning en route to the 10-2 victory in six innings in the opener. 

An RBI infield single by Morgan James gave the V-Hawks an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  

The Bruins responded in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs on a solo homer to right field by Reese Floro, an RBI double to center field by Maricela Egan, and on a two-run single to right field by Allison O'Driscoll, giving BU a 4-1 advantage. 

Brittney Slocum stole home to slice the lead to 4-2 in the top of the third frame. 

An RBI double to center field by Alexa Rose and a two-run single to center field by Egan highlighted a five-run fourth inning as BU extended the advantage to 9-2.

Jurek ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot over the left-field fence, to make the final 10-2. 

Floro finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, and an RBI. Egan was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. 

Savannah Gunn earned the win, improving to 5-0 on the season, as she allowed six hits with no walks and six strikeouts in six innings of work. 

Ella Driebel (0-5) suffered the loss, giving up 10 runs on 10 hits with three walks and four strikeouts in 5.1 innings in the circle. 

Game 2: Bellevue 8, Viterbo 0 (6 innings)

Jurek went 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI to lead BU to the 8-0 win in the nightcap. Ashley Young and Egan also drove in two runs in the victory. O'Driscoll finished 2-for-2 with two doubles and an RBI. 

The Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI double to center field by O'Driscoll. 

A two-run double to right field by Young and a two-run homer to right-center field by Egan increased the BU lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the third inning.

BU extended the margin to 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double off the center-field fence by Jurek.

An RBI single to right field by Sami Reding made it 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth stanza. 

Once again, Jurek ended the game. This time with an RBI double to center field that plated Alexa Rose, giving BU the 8-0 victory. 

Cory Carillo earned the win, improving to 4-1 on the season. She scattered five hits with no walks and nine strikeouts in six innings of work. 

Maddie Wilkey (0-3) was tagged with the loss, allowing eight runs on nine hits with four walks and three strikeouts in six innings.
