Bees win second straight to nab postseason bid

Needing a pair of wins over their final two matches of the regular season, St. Ambrose got just that. The Bees followed up last Thursday's 3-2 win at Judson with a 25-20, 23-25, 25-15, 25-21 win at Viterbo Tuesday night to clinch a spot in next week's CCAC Tournament.

SAU received a dominant performance from Nick Fox, who finished with 17 kills and not a single hitting error in 19 attempts for an .895 hitting percentage. Mikolaj Zielonka put down 11 kills and Charlie Flynn had 10.

After splitting the first two sets, St. Ambrose (8-25, 3-7 CCAC) held just a 13-12 lead midway through the third. But a Fox kill sparked a big run. Zielonka had a kill and Fox was in on two blocks, one with Anthony Anderson and a second with Cael Anderson, to finish the 6-0 run that put the Bees in front 19-12.

Fox added two more kills and an ace down the stretch as SAU pulled away to go in front 2-1.

The fourth set was tied as late as 19-19 before Fox had a kill and teamed with Anthony Anderson for a block to build a 21-19 advantage. Viterbo (11-18, 2-8 CCAC) got one point back but SAU followed with kills from Fox and Zielonka around a V-Hawk hitting error, to go in front 24-20. Two points later, the Bees had secured their postseason spot.

Behind the three Bees with double-digit kills, Jon Guch put down seven and Cael Anderson had four.

Anthony Anderson was credited with a match-best 44 assists. Dillon Markley picked up seven digs while Ethan Karban had six and Anthony Anderson five. Fox and Guch each recorded four digs.

St. Ambrose will enter the CCAC Tournament as the No. 6 seed. The Bees will face the No. 3 seed in a first-round matchup next Tuesday.
