Late layup sinks St. Ambrose

Late layup sinks St. Ambrose

A putback with less than three seconds remaining gave Viterbo a 66-65 win over St. Ambrose in La Crosse, Wis., Tuesday night.

The Bees, who led for much of the game, took a 65-61 lead on a Kaitlyn Brunson jumper from the top of the key with a minute remaining. The V-Hawks answered with a 3-pointer to get within a single point.

On SAU's ensuing possession, Brunson was whistled for an offensive foul giving the ball back to Viterbo. With the clock winding down, the V-Hawks got three shots in the paint at the win. The first two were off the mark, but a follow putback was good. Brunson's desperation shot from half-court was no good at the buzzer.

St. Ambrose (2-7) seemingly took control of the game midway through the fourth quarter. With the score tied at 56-56, Brunson knocked down a jumper and Liz Fish followed with a three. Fish then hit another shot to extend the lead to 63-56 with just over four minutes left. Viterbo came back with five straight points until Brunson's late basket put SAU up four leading to the final sequence.

The loss spoiled a strong shooting night. St. Ambrose shot better than 52 percent from the floor (24-of-46), including a 9-of-17 performance (52.9 percent) from beyond the arc. SAU also outscored Viterbo 8-1 from the line and grabbed a 30-24 advantage on the boards.

The Bees, who forced 20 turnovers, committed 27 of their own. SAU was also outscored 40-16 in the paint.

Kashell Daughty led St. Ambrose with 14 points. Caitlyn Thole scored 12 and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds. Abby Wolter netted 11.

Brunson and Fish each finished with eight points. Caroline Cool scored six, Elly Doe added five and Elly Holubar scored a point.

St. Ambrose will visit No. 4 Clarke Friday.
