Women's Track Claims Second Place in Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Viterbo University Womens Track and Field team competed in the University of Dubuque Good Friday Open on Friday. The V-Hawks finished second out of 10 scoring teams with 134 points.

The V-Hawks secured a trio of gold medals, including the 4x100-meter relay team of Lana Yeakel, Claudia Schunk, Ashley Veronen, and Breanna Ihde winning with a time of 48.84, Emma Johnson recording the best time in the 100-meter hurdles at 15.60, and Bailey Nuutinen clearing 3.55m (11-07.75) for the title in the pole vault.

Ihde and Yeakel also performed very well in the individual 100-meter dash, as Ihde finished second with a time of 12.54, just ahead of Yeakel in third at 12.55.

Veronen earned the silver medal in the 100-hurdles behind her teammate, recording a time of 16.29, and Madelyn Kassulke scored as well, taking sixth place with a time of 17.66. The V-Hawks also dominated the 400-hurdles, taking five of the top eight finishes including Ihde in third (1:10.60), Tess Durscher in fourth (1:12.66), Lainey Teynor in fifth (1:15.90), Kendra Czerneski in seventh (1:24.17), and Kassulke in eighth (1:24.57).

Anya Hirsch earned a podium finish in the 800 meter run, taking third with a time of 2:31.29, as well as fifth in the 1,500 meter run at 5:04.02. Schunk was also fifth in the 400, finishing in 1:01.65.

In the field events, Johnson was second place behind Nuutinen in pole vault, clearing 3.25m (10-08.00), while Emily Howell and Olivia Wingo tied for fifth, each clearing 2.95m (9-08.00).

Payton Dryden had the second best discus throw, with a toss of 41.13m (134-11), and the sixth best hammer toss at 40.87m (134-01). Maria Dade was also seventh in the discus at 37.49m (123-00).

Yeakel added one more medal in the long jump, earning bronze with a leap of 5.19m (17-00.50).

Caillie Kiefer and Howell were neck-and-neck in the javelin throw, finishing fifth and sixth with throws of 24.99m (82-00), and 24.02m (78-10), respectively. Miranda Kendall was also fifth in the high jump, clearing 1.48m (4-10.25), while Lauren Cole had the same height, but finished seventh based on attempts.

The V-Hawks return to action on Wednesday, April 12 at the NSAA Multi-Event Outdoor Championships.
