V-Hawks Struggle Against Mustangs

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- The V-Hawks hosted their first home game of the year on Wednesday night, bringing the 12th ranked Mustangs of Mount Mercy to R.W. Beggs, Sr. Gymnasium. The V-Hawks fell to the Mustangs in three sets despite their hard-fought efforts. With the loss, the V-Hawks fall to 0-5. The Mustangs improve to 3-0 on the season. 

Offensively, the V-Hawks were led by Owen Collitt. Collitt had five kills on a 0.625 efficiency. Logan Amdur and Riley Connors each put up five kills as well. Logan Amdur led the night in assists with 15, while Roman Rzeszutko added eight to the tally. Defensivley, the V-Hawks were led by Styrk Myhre and Riley Connors on the block. Each of the men had two blocks a piece. In the back court, Max Dugan led the V-Hawks with five digs. The only ace of the evening came from Roman Rzeszutko

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Owen Collitt scored the first points for the V-Hawks in set one. The V-Hawks hung with the Mustangs up to 4-3. The Mustangs went on a 9-0 run, but a kill from Logan Amdur cut off the run and put together a 4-0 run for the V-Hawks. The Mustangs responded with yet another run, this time 5-0. The V-Hawks struggled to recover. Late kills from Logan Amdur and Noah Diedrich fought to keep the V-Hawks in the game, but at the end of the set, the V-Hawks fell 25-13. 
  • In set two, the V-Hawks went down early again 6-4. A kill by Styrk Myhre brought the V-Hawks back within one point. The Mustangs took a four point lead at 12-8, but the V-hawks continued to respond with kills from Owen Collitt, Riley Connors, and Styrk Myhre. Late in the set, the Mustangs went on a short run to take the 19-13 lead and force a V-Hawk timeout. Out of the timeout, Owen Collitt secured a major block. Despite the fight, the V-Hawks fell in set two 25-20. 
  • The V-Hawks went down early in set three 4-0, but kills from Owen Collitt and Riley Connors put the V-Hawks back within two. The Mustangs pulled away from the V-Hawks, and they took an 18-10 lead. Two massive blocks from the V-hawks put the team back within five. The V-Hawks continued to fight, but the Mustangs were able to pull away, taking the 25-16 victory.
