V-Hawks win One of Four in Baker Series

BALDWIN CITY, Kansas -- The V-Hawks took a trip south this weekend to Kansas to compete against Baker University in a four-game series. Throughout the series, the V-Hawks were able to pick up one win, dropping three of the games to Baker. With the games, the V-Hawks drop to 1-7 overall this season. Baker improves to 7-3 on the season. 

VU 3, BAKER 9

In the first competition of the weekend, the V-Hawks fell 9-3. Baker went up on the V-Hawks 9-0 in three innings. The V-Hawks scored three runs in the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough. The runs came on scoring from Jaden Vanderwiere and Nathan Faust. Vanderwiere ran in Esteban Sanchez and Xavier Gilmore on a single to center field. Nathan Faust grounded out to second, running in Ryder Mortensen. From the mound, Anthony Sanchez let nine runs in. Ryan Gordon pitched three innings, allowing zero runs through 47 pitches. 

VU 0, BAKER 14

In the second game of the series, the V-Hawks struggled to score. The only hits of the game came from Xavier Gilmore and Anthony Sanchez. The runs from Baker came on four pitchers for the V-Hawks. Jomar Guzman allowed six runs in four innings, Victor Christianson allowed four runs in 0.1 innings, Jean Torres allowed three runs in 0.2 innings, and Alex Petasek allowed one in one inning pitched. The V-Hawks held off Baker for the first two innings, but Baker was able to explode in the third for four runs. They scored four runs in the fifth and the sixth as well. 

VU 0, BAKER 6

In another tough game for the V-Hawks, they fell to Baker 6-0 on Saturday morning. Brandon Shepherd pitched for the V-Hawks, allowing 10 hits and six runs in five innings. Spencer Hautamaki relieved Shepherd, pitching eight balls in one inning and allowing no runs. The V-Hawks only had two hits on the day. THe hits came from Ryder Mortensen and Jake Ulbert. Baker scored their runs in the first, second, and fifth innings, but the V-Hawks couldn't fight back. 

VU 13, BAKER 10

The V-Hawks picked up a win on the weekend in their final competition against Baker. Nick Colker started at the mound, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing four runs and three hits. Luke Widerholt pitched 1.1 innings, allowing four runs and two hits. Aiden Murphy closed out for the V-Hawks, allowing two runs and three hits. Baker pitched five individuals, unable to slow down the V-Hawks. The V-Hawks got to work early, scoring four runs in the top of the second. Baker got within one run at 5-4 in the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, the V-Hawks scored seven runs to go up 12-4. Baker got back within three, but the V-Hawks closed out 13-10. Caden Besemer and Nathan Faust led the way with three hits each. Ryder Mortensen and Xavier Gilmore each had two. Other hits came from Cody Lozano, Esteban Sanchez, Dane Mediger, Jake Ulbert, Hunter Hess, and Matt Monaghan
