Niedzwiedz, Turek toss shutouts as Bees sweep V-Hawks

Brad Niedzwiedz and Joe Turek combined to allow just nine hits while striking out 10 over 14 innings in a pair of shutouts Friday at Viterbo.

Niedzwiedz gave up six hits and struck out three in a 3-0 win in the opener while Turek followed by surrendering just three hits against seven strikeouts in a 14-0 7-inning victory in the second game. The duo combined to issue just one walk.

The Bees themselves managed just three hits in the first game. St. Ambrose's first hit, a Jake Pauley double in the third, scored Bryce Vorwald with the game's first run.

Brandon Roth singled in the fourth after Brandon Matias walked. Joey Fitzgerald Jr. followed with a ground out to score Matias. Later in the fourth, Kevin Niedzwiedz drove in Roth to open up a 3-0 lead.

Pauley also had a one-out single in the fifth for SAU's other hit.

Brad Niedzwiedz worked out of a two-out bases-loaded jam in the fourth. But after allowing a leadoff single in the sixth, he retired the final six hitters he faced.

Quinn Flanagan and Kevin Niedzwiedz had RBI singles in the second inning to stake Turek to an early 2-0 lead.

Turek didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning and never allowed two V-Hawks to reach base in any inning.

The Bees finally broke things open in the fifth and sixth innings.

After RBIs from Pauley and Roth, Fitzgerald's grand slam extended the SAU lead to 8-0 in the fifth. An inning later, Matias, Roth, Fitzgerald and Filip Milatovic drove in runs to push the lead to 13-0.

Ethan McCombs knocked in Caden Thode with the team's final run in the seventh.

Matias, Fitzgerald and Kevin Niedzwiedz each had two hits in the second game. Pauley, Milatovic, Flanagan, Vorwald and Jeremy Conforti also had hits.

St. Ambrose, which won three of four in the four-game set, improved to 14-15 overall and 11-7 in CCAC play. The Bees will play a four-game series at Indiana South Bend next Friday and Saturday.
