V-Hawks Edge Warriors in Home Opener

V-Hawks Edge Warriors in Home Opener

FOREST CITY, IA – The Waldorf men's soccer team had their home opener game against the Viterbo V-Hawks on Wednesday evening. The Warriors lost 2-0.

In the first half, the Warriors had two back-to-back scoring opportunities. The first came from Alex Ardura (FR/La Fresneda, Spain) that was saved by the V-Hawks defense and the second from Antonio Coutinho (SR/Lisbon, Portugal) hit the crossbar.

"What can you say when you hit the bar and post in the first half but end up being 0-2 down. We struggled to move the ball into their middle third and hold the ball, we gave up the ball way too much with poor passing and that is something we will need to correct going into the next game," stated first-year Director of Soccer Thomas Goodman.

Viterbo scored their first goal at the 37th minute. The second goal came in the last minute of the first half.

The Warriors saw a few more scoring opportunities in the second half with a total of six shots, four of them shot on goal.

"I felt Kyle made some amazing saves in the second half to keep us in the game," Goodman said. "When Viterbo went down a man, they slowed the game down and wasted time hurting our ability to play our game and, in the end, we just ran out of time."

Charlie Austin-Ross (SR/Essex, UK) and Kyle Pederson (SO/Ankeny, IA) split time in goal and finished with three and six saves, respectfully. Coutinho had a team-high of three shots, Lucas Berte (SR/Joinville, Brazil) and Ardura each added two.

Looking ahead, the Warriors will travel to St. Ambrose for a non-conference game on Saturday, September 9th at 6 pm.
