Mustangs sweep V-Hawks in non-conference doubleheader

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy softball team swept Viterbo, 9-3 and 5-4, in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at Busse Field.

Allie Poston's second-inning grand slam was the big blow in the opener as the Mustangs rebounded from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the V-Hawks. Sara Heick, Keily Ulatowski, Sam Lee, and Natalie Tecklenburg each finished with a pair of hits. Tecklenburg also had two runs batted in. Leann VandeVoorde (1-0) scattered seven hits over four innings, allowing a pair of earned runs while striking out two and walking a batter. Alyssa McElvain struck out five over the final three frames.

Tecklenburg led off game two with a home run as the Mustangs took a 5-2 lead, then hung on for a one-run victory. Lee drove in two runs with a sacrifice fly and RBI double while Calli Janik went 4-for-4 and Rylee Goodfellow was 2-for-4 for Mount Mercy. Megan Steffens opened with three innings of five-hit ball while surrendering two earned runs. Kalli Minger (6-10) threw the final four frames, allowing just one earned run on two hits.

It's back to Heart of America Athletic Conference play later this week when the Mustangs (17-17, 5-7 Heart) host MidAmerica Nazarene at 4:00 pm on Friday at Busse Field.
