Waldorf uses late rally to advance to winner's bracket of NSAA Tournament
DICKINSON, N.D. - No. 5 seed Waldorf used an eighth-inning rally to come-from-behind and top No. 4 seed Viterbo to advance to the winner's bracket of the NSAA Tournament Friday night.
Waldorf trailed 2-1 going into the third inning. Kolby Amaral and Zach Meyer singled to lead off the inning. A Robert Gurney double to left scored Amaral and moved Meyer to third to tie the game at 2. A Ryan Webster single plated Meyer to give Waldorf the lead. Later a Tyler Wytulka sacrifice fly scored the inning's final run and give Waldorf a 4-2 advantage.
Viterbo scored three runs in the fifth and seventh innings to take an 8-5 lead over Waldorf going into the eighth inning. Juan Jorge drew a lead-off walk. Ian Carr then reached on an error. Riley Rauch brought them both home on a triple to center. He scored to the game at 8 on an RBI from Amaral. Meyer singled to advance Amaral to third. Amaral scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch to give Waldorf a 9-8 lead.
The Waldorf bullpen preserved the lead. Trevor Brace came on in the seventh to get the inning's final out. He retired the V-Hawks in order in the eighth. Reno Morehouse came on in the ninth and retired the V-Hawks in order as well to record the save. Rauch, Amaral, and Meyer all recorded two hits for Waldorf. Brace got the win on the mound in relief.
Waldorf faces No. 1 Bellevue at approximately 5 p.m. central (4 mountain) in Dickinson.
